Global information - spanning the world wide web

The Internet is a never-ending resource of information that has made learning and connecting with people easier than anything we have ever seen. With a tool of such a broad scope, that literally covers the world from top to bottom, it is impossible to be free of the natural risks that come along with a device of these proportions.

Growing up in the digital age

Kids are usually savvier than adults when it comes to navigating a computer these days, and that is in large part because they are starting out at such an early age.

Factoids

CNN.com reports that pre-schoolers are likely to spend as much time in front of the computer as they are playing outside, three times longer than the time spent reading, and on an average day, about a quarter of 4 to 6 year olds spend more than an hour on a computer. However, the more time they spend online the more likely they are to encounter some of the unpleasant people that frequent some websites and chat rooms looking to prey on unknowing children.

  • 69% of teens regularly receive personal messages online from people they don't know and most of them don't tell a trusted adult about it
  • 20% of students in middle school as well as high school admit that they have met face-to-face with someone they first met on the Internet (Market Wire. November 6, 2006. i-SAFE Inc. December 12, 2006)

Unsupervised children are also subject to the growing phenomenon of cyber-bullying

Cyber-bullying can involve personal and physical threats, emotional teasing, attacking of physical appearance, threats to family, and even blackmail. This type of online bullying is at its peak when children are around the age of 11-13. The i-Safe survey stated 53% of teens admitted to saying hurtful things via the Internet to someone.

Inappropriate content is also abundant on the Internet

The porn industry is a 2.5 billion dollar industry and shockingly the people that view porn the most are between the ages of 12 and 17. More than 20,000 images of child pornography are posted on the Internet every week (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children). And police say that 40% of people charged with child pornography abuse children.

The reality is that it is important for the educational growth of children for them to be online. Banning kids from the Internet would be a disservice to them. Sure the Internet can be a dangerous place if you're not careful, but it can also be a great resource and a never-ending pool of information. It's important to monitor children's Internet activity, but sometimes you need a little help.
